Traditional macaroni and cheese, or mac ‘n’ cheese is a casserole baked in the oven. With plenty of cheese, it is very gooey, and creamy.
There are different ways to prepare mac ‘n’ cheese, but this is easy and it tastes delicious.
Mac ‘n’ cheese is easy to make and it is also a comfort food that you can prepare at any time, because it needs only few ingredients and it is easy to make.
You can buy mac ‘n’ cheese from stores, but after trying this classic recipe you will always prepare it at home and you won’t go for the store bought ones.
I prepared a bechamel sauce and added the cheese to it. Then I mixed the pasta into it. After adding the pasta to the sauce I baked the pasta until bubbly.
I have prepared this recipe in the traditional way, so I have baked it. But if you are running out if time, you don’t have to bake it. You can serve it immediately after adding the pasta into the sauce.
WHICH CHEESE SHOULD I USE FOR MAC ‘N’ CHEESE?
The cheese is the main ingredient in this recipe, that makes the recipe rich, creamy and flavorful. I have used white American cheese in this recipe. You can also use Swiss cheese or sharp cheddar cheese.
MACARONI AND CHEESE RECIPE

PREPARATION TIME : 20 MINUTES.
COOKING TIME : 20 MINUTES.
BAKING TIME : 30 MINUTES.
CAN BE SERVED TO 4 PEOPLE.
INGREDIENTS
MEASUREMENTS ARE IN 250 ML CUP
One and a half cup of elbow macaroni
1/4 cup of unsalted butter
One medium sized onion, finely chopped
Salt as required
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup of all purpose flour
1 and 3/4 cup of full fat cow milk
Two cups of shredded American white cheese
METHOD
STEP 1: Cook the macaroni as directed on the package, and keep it aside.
STEP 2: Heat the butter in a thick bottomed pan over a medium heat, add the freshly chopped onions, add little salt and saute until transparent.
STEP 3: Stir in the flour and cook it in low flame, stirring constantly, until smooth.
STEP 4: Let the stove be in low temperature. Pour the milk, add the black pepper powder and heat it by stirring constantly, until the milk boils and becomes thick and creamy.
STEP 5: Stir in the cheese and mix until melted. Switch off the stove and stir in the macaroni. Transfer it to a baking tray.
STEP 6: Preheat the oven to 175 degree Celsius and bake it for 30 minutes, until hot and bubbly. Serve it warm.
NOTE: Keep an eye on the milk, because the milk boils fast and burns easily.
You can top it up with a hand full of extra cheese before baking to make it extra creamier.
If you have leftover mac ‘n’ cheese, you can store it in the fridge and use it the next day, by adding some milk to it and heating it in a pan in low heat.
