Jackfruit Payasam

Jackfruit is a huge, exotic fruit which grows abundantly in tropical countries like Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and also in Southern part of India.

Jackfruit is considered the largest fruit. Jackfruits are usually oblong in shape but, some may vary in shape. It has rough and short protrusions. It is green in colour when it is raw and turns yellow when it ripes. When ripe it gives a sweet smell.

 

Jackfruits are packed with protein and loads of other nutrients like VitaminB and Potassium. This fruit boosts the immune system, improves energy level prevents anaemia, improves digestion. Other benefits of jackfruit include slowing down the ageing process, promoting bone health, protecting the eyes etc.

Jackfruit can be consumed on its own or it can be incorporated in various dishes. This excellent fruit is enriched with vitamins and minerals that are beneficial to the proper functioning of the body.

Here is a yummy recipe using this super fruit.

Ingredients

Jackfruit

(Finely chopped)   -1 cup.

Warm milk             – 1 cup.

Jaggery                 – 1 cup or 3/4 cup depending on your taste.

Moong dal            – 1/4 cup.

Sago seeds          – 3 tablespoons.

Cashews and raisins – a handful.

Ghee                              – 3 tablespoons.

Cardamoms crushed  – few.

Preparation

Pressure cook the dal with 1 cup of water. In high flame for three whistles and then in low flame for 10 minutes. Open the lid when the pressure is completely gone.

Open the jackfruit and remove the seed from it

Cut it into fine pieces and keep

Jaggery

Pour one cup of water and heat it

Jaggery is fully dissolved in water

Strain it and keep

Cook sago seeds in 3/4 cup of water until it is soft and keep aside

Heat ghee

Fry Cashews and raisins

Method

In a thick bottomed vessel, heat two tablespoons of ghee and add in the jackfruit pieces and saut’e well in medium flame, for 7 to 8 minutes or until soft

Now add in the cooked moong dal and saute it for 4 to 4 minutes in low flame.

 

Pour the jaggery water into this mixture and stir well.

Put the cooked sago seeds in and mix well

Now pour the warm milk into this mixture and mix well. Keep the flame in medium and let it come to boil.

Once it boils Simmer it for 5 minutes.

Put the fried cashews raisins and crushed cardamoms and stir well.

Switch off the stove and transfer it to a serving dish
