Easy and spicy pepper mutton curry that can be served with bread varieties, rice…

Curries are perhaps the most familiar components of Indian cuisine. With combinations of spices and herbs, they are delightful with surprisingly great aroma and flavor. There are many distinct varieties of vegetarian and non-vegetarian curries across India.

Among non vegetarian curries, mutton curries hold a special place in Indian households. Different varieties of mutton curries are found across the states of India.

Earlier, mutton curry was prepared in an earthen pot and slow cooked by wood fire, which was time consuming. But nowadays, it is easily cooked using a pressure cooker.

This is a simple and easy version of mutton curry. I did not know that preparing mutton curry was so easy until I prepared this curry. I have used goat meat for this recipe.

Although it is a simple curry, it is very flavourful. This curry can be paired up with many bread varieties like chapati and naan. It also tastes excellent with rice.

If I prepare this curry for dinner I usually serve it with bread or Indian bread varieties like chapati or naan. But for lunch, I serve it with rice. It can also be served with south Indian food items like dosa, idly, etc.

SPICY PEPPER MUTTON CURRY RECIPE

PREPARATION TIME : 15 TO 20 MINUTES

COOKING TIME : 45 TO 50 MINUTES

CAN BE SERVED TO FOUR PEOPLE

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 kg mutton cut into small pieces
  • 1 medium sized onion thinly sliced
  • 1 medium tomato cut into pieces
  • 1 or 2 two green chilies split
  • 1 and 1/2 inch sized fresh ginger peeled and coarsely ground
  • 3 big cloves of garlic coarsely ground
  • 3 tablespoons of yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons of coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper powder
  • 1 teaspoon of garam masala powder
  • 2 table spoons of oil
  • Required amount of salt

METHOD

STEP 1: Wash and clean the mutton pieces. I usually clean them with a bit of turmeric powder. I soak them in turmeric water for 15 minutes and then wash the pieces thoroughly.

STEP 2: Over a medium heat in a stove top pressure cooker, heat the oil, add the onions and saute until soft.

STEP 3: Add the ground ginger and garlic, and saute until their raw smell is gone.

STEP 4: Add the mutton pieces and mix. Add the turmeric powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, black pepper powder and garam masala and mix well.

STEP 5: Add the tomato pieces and the split green chili.

STEP 6: Add the yogurt and mix well.

STEP 6: Add one cup of water and required amount of salt. Close the pressure cooker, cook at a high temperature until the cooker releases five whistles, then reduce the temperature to low and cook it for another 15 minutes.

STEP 7: Open the lid of the pressure cooker after the pressure inside the cooker is completely released.

STEP 8: Serve it warm.

NOTE :

To clean the mutton, fetch water in a bowl and add one teaspoon of turmeric powder in it. Soak the mutton in it for 15 minutes, then drain the water, and clean the mutton well.

You can also cook this mutton curry in a thick bottomed vessel, but it will take more time than the pressure cooker. If you are cooking in that type of vessel, you will need more water. Cover and cook the curry until soft. Check the curry often and add a bit of water in between if needed.
